Your Stories: Envision

Patrick was an Envision day regular after first coming to Hairspray with us in 2009, when he was 13. Patrick has bilateral cataracts that severely limit his vision, and also some difficulty hearing.
Our theatre project for blind and partially sighted young people, Envision, was the only activity he had taken part in specifically for those with visual impairment, which he found to be a real confidence boost. As he says, “you feel like you’re in a little community and you’re not the only one… being around other VI people that understand how hard it can be to be independent.”
Patrick’s last Envision event was at Memphis The Musical, and was a personal milestone for him. For the first time he felt confident to travel to the theatre by train on his own, a “huge step forward for him” said his mum, Helen.
At aged 19, he went off to College to study a BTEC in Theatre Management, hoping to pursue this as a career. Although he loved watching the shows, it was the opportunity provided by Envision to learn about the workings of the production, get on stage for the touch tour and meet West End theatre staff that inspired him to choose this path. As his mum said, “his love of theatre began with these days.”
