Youth Leadership Conference

Youth Leadership In The Arts Conference 2019

Thursday 21st February

10.30am – 5pm

The Actors Centre / Tristan Bates Theatre

Thank you to everyone who came to our third annual Youth Leadership in the Arts Conference: a day of inspiring, expert-led talks and workshops offering young people the chance to gain hands-on experience and insight into what it takes to be a successful leader within the Arts.

Here are some of our highlights:

"Don't be scared of your failures, because they will lead to success."

Emma Rice's inspiring, empowering and uplifting speech gave our young attendees plenty to think about.

Pitch Perfect: Paul Taylor-Mills talked to our delegates about the role of a producer and his fascinating career in the industry.

Jamie Body led a fun workshop about chairing a panel discussion.

Open to anyone aged 15-23 interested in playing a leading role in the future of the Arts, this inspiring event gave delegates the opportunity to:

  • Gain valuable, specialist insight into what it takes to successfully lead organisations, projects and campaigns within the Arts
  • Develop leadership skills through practical workshop activities
  • Network with peers and chat to members of the Mousetrap team about opportunities to get involved
  • Get some expert-led training experience to add to their CV

We lined up an exciting variety of (45 minute) skills-based workshops and panel discussions to run throughout the day, including:

  • Pitch Perfect (pitching your project), with Paul Taylor-Mills
  • Leading a Marketing Campaign, with Sonia Friedman Productions
  • Setting Up Your Theatre Company, with Les Enfants Terribles and Papercreatures
  • Branding Yourself and How to (Net)work It, with Jacquie from Creative Platform
  • Festival Planning and Programming, with Hightide Festival Producers Holly and Robyn

Delegates were thrilled to be joined by leading Theatre Director Emma Rice, who delivered an empowering keynote speech to bring the conference to the end. She talked about the importance of being determined and resilient in the face of rejection, embracing failures as opportunities, and being flexible and open to change.

“Don’t be scared of it (failure) because your failures will just lead to your successes. There’s always a different path and when something goes wrong, it just turns you onto a different one which will be as brilliant and undoubtedly more brilliant.  Don’t be scared of change. It’s the only thing that’s certain, is change. The trick is to notice it and manage it well and try and be in control of it."

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped to make this such a memorable day.

We can't wait to do it all again next year!

Huge thanks to Futures for Kids who are supporting this year's conference.
